Noughts and Crosses Wall Art

A note from Paschal:

‘Noughts and crosses’ started as a pen drawing on paper with one square and one circle. This one circle and one square were replicated, multiplied and enlarged to create patterns both seen and unseen. It lived and evolved in my head (which was interesting), on the backs of envelopes, in many places before being mathematically developed in adobe illustrator.

Each piece is made one at time and each version differs in the number of layers and the colouring of those layers, with natural textures and layer/colour combinations it is almost certain each large version of noughts and crosses will be totally unique. (small versions are made in two’s) Layering can vary from 5 to 9, this version in a very light grey face has 8 layers. As the day and light passes this piece takes on different looks, depths and tonal variations which is some sort of magic out of my control!

Geometric design has great importance in many cultures dating back through many times, is evident in nature, in science, in creative arts among others. Pre Internet age, my own discovery and wonderment came via books, magazines, curiosity and dreaming, mostly through Islamic and Moorish architecture and design, mandala’s, of course my own immediate heritage - Celtic knotworks and designs.

Each artwork piece is designed, and made from start to end by myself in Northwest Ireland using a mixture of wood materials, MDF and plywood varieties including birch, poplar, and mixed hardwoods. All colouring is from ‘Tikkurila’ acrylic and/or enamel paints. As wood textures naturally vary and I often mix paint shades myself the finished artworks can and do vary. Some pieces are totally unique in colour whereas others will always vary a little from the one I made before, which helps make your chosen piece more exclusive! The light angle, time of day etc make each piece look different at different times which adds to the ambience of each design.
